Nice! Finally! After almost three months!! I'll skip the ranting for now. After all, I still need to drive the 60 miles each way to pick it up. (I could have forced my hand and made them ship it, but that would just be pressing my luck!)

Channeling Tom Hanks

Going on two months ago, I reluctantly sent my entire v-drum kit in for repair, because one of the components on it (the hi-hat) went wiggy on me. Why they made me ship the entire thing, I don't know (heck, it cost the insurance company $280 in shipping alone!). The short version, every time I call to check the status on it, I get the same reponse, "we're waiting on parts, it should take about two weeks, we'll call you". So, as you've guessed, two weeks go by and no call. So I call them, and the cycle repeats- for two months?!?

At what point am I allowed to be pissed off? I mean, I can always revert back to the drum machine to write songs, but that's so... what's the word, limiting.

Instead of whining about it anymore, I thought I'd post some pics I forgot I posted in my flickr account almost a year ago.

The Saga Continues! A Drumset (non) Update

The saga continues! I called the repair shop this morning to get a status update on my drumset, because two weeks ago they said "it should be complete in two weeks". After giving the guy my work order number he says, "oh yeah- we're still waiting on about five or six parts..."

FIVE OR SIX PARTS?!

Not being an electrical engineer, I can't tell if this is a good or bad sign. If they're going to just replace an entire unit because one piece on the inside is busted (as Americans are prone to do), I certainly would not mind a brand new high-hat, but that's just one part, right? In this case, to need five or six parts, I can only think of what else they might be replacing.

As a floor model, the set was "well-used" when I got it and pretty banged up. While I didn't know it at the time, it is actually missing a few screws here and there too. It wasn't until I downloaded an Owner's Manual that I became aware there should have been velcro fasteners for all of the cables (neither the manual or fasteners were given to me at purchase). A musician friend who owns the exact same kit went down the list of what was missing or "not right". Most noteably, in his words, my kick drum is "thrashed". I didn't think much of it at the time because it played just fine. (Tip: Unless you can give it a good top-to-bottom inspection, *and know what to look for* never get the floor model from Guitar Center!) Again, if they choose to replace or fix the kick drum too, how awesome is that? However, if- and here's where it get interesting, the repair shop is opening up the components and pulling out guts and motherboards and replacing them, my experience in building an rebuilding computers and working on cars and tells me this is a great point for something to go wrong and get overlooked until the entire set is shipped back and I discover the problem three months from now.

Or, I could just be paranoid and going through withdrawals of not having a drumset for almost a month.

Is Obama the New Bob Marley? (Part Two)

A few days ago I posited a theory about the similarities between Barack Obama and Bob Marley. My own observations were mostly a discussion about the surprising number of songs written about the former, with the positive tones and call-to-action like lyrics involved. The themes in these recent songs about Obama are almost identical in content to those of Mr. Robert Nesta Marley. My friends called me crazy but I know I'm right.

Today I stumbled upon a similar discussion from the Trinidad and Tobago News Blog (who knew!). They identified some similarities such as, "Robert “Bob” Nestor Marley and Senator Barack Obama both have one thing in common: a white parent. Bob Marley’s father was British and white; Senator Barack Obama’s mother was American and white..." Sure, that's kind of interesting, but not really what I was going for in my own supposition.

How about this one:

"Like Bob Marley, young white Americans totally identified with Obama’s message about their future. They felt Obama’s “positive vibration.” Like Bob Marley, Obama’s youthful, white –looking, physical appearance was the magnetic force to draw young white Americans to his side. They not only saw themselves in his political mirror but also clothed themselves in his rock star persona a la Bob Marley."

Okay now we're getting into some Thesis quality material! Okay one more...

"Bob Marley’s lyrics spoke to revolutionary change in society between the “Haves” and “Have nots” and exhorted the oppressed/ marginalized to “get up, stand up; stand up for your rights”.

Is Obama the new Bob Marley?

Last night I went onto the iTunes Store because I had heard that Obama's Weekly Radio Address is available as podcast. Being the lazy/resourceful person I am, I typed "obama" into the iTunes search window. I expected to see a lot of Daily Show clips, official footage, news shows, and political podcasts. However, what I *didn't* expect to see, was all the songs about Barack Obama!

It seems a lot of rap artists have something to say about Obama, which is not surprising. But so do artists from from almost every other genre as well- country, pop, "world music" such as Calypso, Soca, and even Congolese! And it doesn't stop there- reggaeton, mariachi... Seriously- mariachi! But the most popular genre of Obama songs appears to be Reggae, which I find quite interesting. And I'm not talking about some piddley no-name indie artists either. That is, unless you consider Cocoa Tea and Steel Pulse "little". (For those not into Reggae, these two artists are about as A-List as it gets!) I then sauntered onto YouTube and BitTorrent to find even more artists singing about the 44th President of the United States.

I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but I am not aware of any other U.S. president that has had even *one* song written about them (not counting the ones that mock them are string along sound bytes to a techno beat), not to mention a whole boat load. Everyone seems to love Obama (well, not everyone, but you know what I mean). Given the rock star treatment Barack already received from the media and everyday people, and I now as I've discovered, the music community as well, this all leads to my conclusion/question/speculation-- Is Obama the new Bob Marley?

My co-worker mentioned that this pro-Obama scene we're experiencing is very much like when John Kennedy was elected but of course, with the 21st century twist. But I'm not old enough to remember that, so if you are old enough to share your own insights, please feel free to do so!

Two Weeks?!?!

It took four days for UPS to ship my drum kit 80 miles. *shakes head* (I asked/begged if I could just drive it down there myself but they said no?!?) Given the hassles involved just to get it on a truck, I'm glad they managed to send me an email letting me know it actually made it to its destination. But, as it turns out, that was the easy part!

Now, I don't know much about repairin' electronical devices, but I do know where to get a part just like anything electrical in about 48 hours- you know, that Internet thing? So, after two days of not hearing a thing about the status, today I took it upon myself to contact the shop I sent my drums to. After telling them 12 different kinds of information, they verified they had received the shipment, and that it may take 2-3 weeks to get the thing fixed.

2-3 WEEKS?!?! I could have ordered the one broken part and had it shipped in 2-3 days! The price we pay to not spend money! Go figure!

And of course, I've put it into my calendar to bug them again in 14 days. :)

Away to Battle, a maiden awaits...

Remember the old movies, where they show the young maiden, stricken with grief after sending her loved one off to war, not knowing if she will ever see him return alive again? Well, that's kind of how I feel right now. Why? Well, I had to send my drum kit into the shop. :(

The hi-hat on my V-Drum kit has been acting funny lately and finally went into a coma about a week ago. All hail the Extended Warranty!

I called the number on the side and they said "no problem!". And as usual, that's when the problems began. I get a phone call two days later with the details on how/where to send it. Despite the issue being with only one (1) piece of the set, I am required to send in the entire kit?! Kinda weird, but hey it's an electronic device, so I kinda understand. I get the info needed to ship it off, disassemble and pack it up, and load it into the back of the MINI.

Calling ahead to verify they will know what I'm talking about (yes, that's the kinda guy I am), the shipping centre has not received the fax from the guarantor and has no clue what I'm talking about. (A fax? Really? What century is this again?) I call up Heir Guarantor and they send the fax again. I head off to the shipping centre. I get there and they have not received the fax. I take a deep breath. While still at the counter I call the guarantor again again and they read me the requisite information over the phone. It is at this time that I discover none of the on-duty clerks have access to generate the work order and I am told I must wait for the Manager who is scheduled to come in later. Four hours later. I breath and walk out without trashing the place.

I drive back down to the shop five hour later (because that's the kind of guy I am) and no Manager in sight. The low-paid, barely trained clerks understand my frustration and try to call the Manager on the phone- his phone is off?! Clearly perturbed, yet eerily polite and respectful, I give one of the clerks my card and say "please have your manager call me when he gets in". And of course, NO PHONE CALL!!

The next day (this morning) I come back and the same clerks are working. Clerk #1 looks me straight in the eye and says, "OMG I'm so sorry! The Manager is not here!" She mentions that she gave him my card and I mention that he never called me. She goes on to explain that "it's not that we can't submit the work order, its that we don't know how". I breathe deeply and pause before speaking. I calmly describe how lack of staff training is bad for business and customer satisfaction, and vaguely question the qualifications of the management staff who do not ensure that their staff is properly trained (worker bees eat that sh*t up!) I ask, "what do you suggest I do now?" [ed. note: Yes, I was a retail manager for six years and am now purposely playing head games with the help]. Another girl (who wasn't there the previous day) says, "what's going on?" The first clerk explains the situation. New Girl says, "let's see what I can do"...

New Girl seems to know a little bit more of the process and begins to get things rolling. I ask New Girl, "How can I be confident that my package will be sent safely, when every time I come in here, I lose confidence in this store's ability to do its job?" [yes, more head games. *grin*] New Girl says, "I will do my best to help you and all I can do is ask you to trust me". I say, "what's your name again?" She says "Sara(h)". I say, "okay Sara(h), let's do this".

I wish I could say everything went smoothly from there. First the shop stil didn't have all the info needed to fill out the work order so I had to call the guarantor a third time and have them send a (fourth) fax with the information. Then the office of the number she was supposed to call to get an authorization code was closed (Weekends, go figure). She calls another store and seeks advice on what to do next. FINALLY we get a shipping label printed up. I bring in all 10 pieces of my kit and place it in the back room. Sara(h) ensures me it will be packaged up and sent off on the morrow.

I graciously thank her for her patience and extra efforts and leave without trashing the place. Do I expect everything to run smoothly from this point? HELL NO!! My tracking number still does not show up on the UPS site and it's only been 12 hours since I dropped it off. At least I know my sh*t is insured and if anything goes wrong its on the shop and not me. And I know the name of the clerk, the store manager, *and* shop owner. Because I'm observant. :)

And yeah, Sara(h) is also quite attractive which makes it easier to remain calm. She also has no giant carbon-based item on either hand which is a good sign! Assuming my package will not suffer a fate similar to the Lusitania, I will have to figure out how to ask her out and perhaps invite her to Wicked® when I pick up my fixed kit. Whenever that is.

Fortunately I never expect anything to go smoothly... :)

What's in a name (change)?

Greetings folks! Well, we're in full swing into 2009 now, and with a new year comes new things for yours truly and The Bushfinger Music Project.

Along with hopes, dreams, wishes and prayers, the New Year rings in a new studio, new hardware, new website (soon), new goals, and subsequently, a new name for my band? [dramatic flourish]

Yeppers- It looks like its time to retire the name and move forward. Not for contract or trademark dispute reasons (which I am no stranger to), but, well, for many reasons. For one, with the namesake and original inspiration for the Bushfinger Music Project, aka Mr. Knucklehead- finally out of our hair (or is he?!?!), having "Bushfinger" in the name is just that much less funny (still funny to me, but less to others). Oh and another good reason- when you do a google search for "Bushfinger", I don't come up on the top of the list. Okay sure I'm at least on the front page, so I guess I can't complain about that. And that's just two of a bout four or five reasons why it's time to consider a name change.

"But to what?" You say? Well, that is indeed the question isn't it? I tend to come up with the best names for bands when I'm not even thinking about it. But since I'm thinking about it right now, I can't think of one! (Don'tcha hate that?!)

I am always open to your suggestions on just about everything, and now, naming my band. I'll figure out a prize or something for the one I like the best. And for everyone else, no worries- I will be sure to keep you informed fo any changes as they come up.

Until then, have a cupcake!

Smells Like Flowers - Bushfinger Music Project

My friend james* has recently started a fun little project where a topic of the month is presented, and a variety of people are asked to contribute something creative surrounding that topic.

When I received the email about December's topic, I already had half the song written before I even finished reading the email! As good with words as james is, I took the liberty of borrowing a bit of text from the email (with permission of course), added a few words of my own, some catchy pop riffs, and voila!

"New Music Tuesday, Episode 35" is smugly entitled "Smells Like Flowers", co-written by yours truly and james, who prefers lowercase and would want you to visit stewedtomatoes.blogspot.com for some excursions in creative writing, photography, and the occasional theme-related pop song.

The Eternal Question...

Sometimes I'm curious what my life would be like if I were not a musician. Would it be more or less boring? Would I be more productive in other pursuits, or just sit around and play video games all night?

The song I'm working on right now was "done" at least a month ago. Or so one would think. As a timberlake-esque pop song, it features lots of keyboard, drums, boy-band harmonies, and is just okay... (I do not attempt to compare myself to J to the T). Weeks after completing that project- i.e., a few nights ago- A few drinks in and screwing around on the bass guitar, I gave birth to a fat-ass funky bass riff! A riff so fat it needed to be recorded immediately before I forgot it!

The process is simple enough: Drum loop for tempo, hit record, lay down a fat groove. "Now that's fat!" I said.

Inspiration comes from odd sources and can vary from person to person, and even song to song. Being either lazy, uninspired, and/or drunk at the time, instead of writing new lyrics, I opened up my "Lyrics" folder and randomly chose the aforementioned timerblake-ripoff, and sang the words over the drum and bass tracks. You know- just to create a feeling for whatever this song would turn out to be.

I was about to go to bed and thought "just a quick rhythm guitar track- with some wah-wah and phaser- you know- just to get a feel for where this track is headed"... I laydown a 70's porno guitar groove and should really be getting to bed now. But noooo... There are some things you just can't do with a drum machine, so of course, gotta throw down some funky licks... "just so I don't forget what I'm aiming for"... (he said).

Now it's who-knows-what-time in the morning and I still have work tomorrow. But, let me just lay a little lead guitar in there- so I know what vocal harmonies I want to put it later when I write some real words for the song...

Hit save, rewind, and play...

WTF?! My pop song is officially a funky rock jam!? I mean, seriously- "why write new words at this point?" I thought. I mix down the rough cut and pop it onto the iPod, and finally go to bed. The next day I'm listening to it all day at work and at the gym and can't wait to get back into the studio to work on it some more, which basically means, re-record all those tracks over again, while sober (lol).

Three days later (I do have a day job, after all) and the song is finally DONE!! Embellishments, mixed, mastered, EQ'd. Perfect!

Then as I'm driving to work today, listening to my masterpiece, it hits me: "Conga drums would be sick right here!"

Which bodes the eternal question, "When is a song ever "done"?"*

In late 2006 he posted the second full multi-track master of one of his songs onto the internet, "Survivalism"- inviting the general masses to remix it at will. I began my interpretation of this track in early 2007 and was somehow distracted. (*coughmastersthesiscough*)

I went back and "completed" my remix a few days ago, which I have dubbed the "Nuclear Winter" mix. I encourage your thoughts and comments!

While "Good Karma" is an excellent name for a band, we're talking about the concept that bad things happen to bad people and good things happen to good people. Eventually anyway.

Cami, describes herself as many things, Trance Diva, Rock Star, Cool Chick... All of them true!

She has over 40 original, collaborative, and others' songs recorded. Some have been played overseas and a few in the USA. Most of her work is recorded trance, house, electronica meant for the club/rave scene, but she also loves more moody sounds like Depeche Mode, Wolfsheim, Blaqk Audio, VNV Nation, and similar. She has recorded and written in every style from acoustic folk to blues, cabaret, alt/pop, alt/rock, rock, indie, punk, musical theater, standards, and adult contemporary.

I had the honor of remixing some of her most widely known tracks in 2005, and then my studio was ransacked and I lost all my master tapes. I recently found some of Cami's remixes, and with her permission, now feature one of my favorites, "Come My Way".

Last night I was checking my webstats when I noticed a huge spike in hits this month for one of the oldest totally not serious tracks I've got online, "If You Could Read My Mind". It made no sense. However, I'm a pretty bright guy, so I grabbed a cup of chai and proceeded to practice my Google-Fu.

I vaguely remember the Gordon Lightfoot track. But that didn't connect. I dug deeper. Some chick named Amber did I remix of the Studio 54 hit. But nothing connected there either.

After some time, and a sidetrack onto sogou.com (go figure!) I think I figured it out- Canadian Idol contestant Kalan Porter. (ed. i didn't even know there was a Canadian Idol!). Apparently in a recent episode she did a cover of the 70's hit, and of course, the masses descend on the Internet to track it down. As a result, I've got yet another ludicrous bandwidth bill. And still no record deal.

Where's the Music, Yo?

Sorry folks, I've been busy! Insert Valid Excuses #3-5 (because the first two are lame).

#3: I thought I was done with school. Instead, I have spent half the summer in a paperwork battle with University officials. I am currently losing. :(

#4: It's been 100+ degrees lately, which makes it kinda tough to turn off the air-conditioner. And if you've ever tried to record with the air-conditioner on in the studio, well, you know how unsuccessful that can be...

And finally,

#5: I have been signed on as the official un-official "Music Director" and soundtrack provider for MotorkultTV.com! Yes, that's right, I'm officially a Producer! (of sorts). I also got cajoled into to "consulting" for several upcoming projects of their parent company. The next few months should be quite interesting!

Oh and I can't forget to mention that I will be at the Podcast and New Media Expo on Sept. 28-30! Track me down and say the magic words, and get a free Promo CD! (Magic words: "Hey- I love your show! Can I have a CD?")

WTF is Chocolate Rain?

WTF is "Chocolate Rain"? Yeah, I could google it. Heck I could even ask a human. But that would take all the fun out of it, right? "What?" You say?

Apparently in my walled-garden of 300 bookmarked sites, I have managed to miss the latest web meme (short for "phenomenon"), "Chocolate Rain". I don't even know what it is. Is it a music video? A song? An old TV commercial? A new TV commercial from some foriegn land? (Cuz you know how funny them Kiwis are!) I honestly have no clue.

If I don't know anything about it, how do I ~~know~~ think this is one of those viral internet thingies? Well I'll you why: In less than a week, I have heard at least 6 different people refer in some way, to "Chocolate Rain". And then they laugh. Profusely. And then everyone in the circle sings "chocolate rain" again, and they all laugh again. I mean like when you were telling your friends about Gary Brolsma doing the "Numa Numa Dance" and then everyone does the dance and starts laughing. Yeah- like that. Could Chocolate Rain be even bigger than the guys who dance on treadmills? You know those guys- um... well... I haven't seen that one either actually. Except when Ozzie did a spoof of it to open up his set at Ozzfest this year. And everyone laughed.

So how do I manage to miss the latest hip, trendy, viral, internet meme stuff until it's old news? Well, frankly, I got shit to do. Yes, I said it. I'm a grown man. I work hard, doing grown man shit all day. And when I get home, I'm still doin' shit. That's what adults do.

When I'm on the web I'm not neccessarily being "entertained". I'm checking two bank accounts and six credit cards and trying not to bounce shit. I have 5 email addresses! FIVE! I'm maintaining 5 more blogs and two websites. I'm producing two podcasts and watching twenty while updating and tweaking accounts on Flickr and YouTube and MySpace and this funky thing called Dizzler.com I just heard of a few weeks ago. I know I'm forgetting something else- that's how pre-occupied I am. Oh yeah and Digg.com. I know that one. If it hits the front page on Digg.com I might know about it within the next two weeks. I mean, except for the whole Carlos Mencia backlash. A perfect example of another dude who managed to get famous without me ever knowing who they are, until it's old news. In Internet-time that is. Oh by the way, LonelyGirl15 is dead. Yeah. Killed off by a religious cult. I saw it on an online NEWS SHOW?! (puhleeease!)

There are a ton of Web 2.0 revolutions I'm missing right now just by writing this blog entry (which incidently, used to be called an "online journal" until the term "blog" was coined by Peter Merholz in 1999). I'm not doing the Twittr Pownce Jaiku trifecta. I don't have a Facebook account. I don't have a Skype account. Heck I don't have an iTunes account. And I'm not even 70. Sure I shunned "that mp3 thing" for the longest too. I think I'm doing alright.

And since you're still reading, maybe you can tell me who the F is Rihanna? I've never seen or heard of this person before being inundated with banner ads from the worst of all sites ever (what exactly do you do with $580 million dollars?).

Yeah, I know I'm ranting. This post doesn't make the world a better place. I'm not giving out free hugs every Thursday or flying to Salt Lake City Utah to preach Atheism. (cool video btw! *thumbsup!*). I'm not winning any Air Guitar Championships. And we all know how lucrative that sport is. And I'm definitely not going to record a rap song and send it to 50 Cent for a chance to win a record deal in exchange for giving up all copyrights to my own work. Yeah- you heard me Curtis.

But while I'm writing this I can tell you what else I'm not doing- I'm not getting anything important done! And so is the conundrum we call, InterWeb.

As a musician/cameraman/producer/editor, I must give it up to Ethan Winer. He may be a dorky looking band nerd/tech geek, but he can play the **** out of a Cello! How do you know you're "super cool"? When you get a "MySpace Friend Request" from someone you have absolutely no connection with?! (yes, I checked!)

With a band profile on MySpace I do get a lot of requests from other bands, friends of bands, and other band/music-related MySpacers. Then of course, there are all the folks I actually know in real life. Call me naive or just behind the curve, but I never anticipated an unsolicited request from a random 'Spacer, let alone a hottie that *isn't* trying to lead me to a porn site (so far anyway).

So, as the BMW/MINI factory navigation system says as you reach your destination,

"You [pause] have arrived"

Hey Folks- this week's edition of New Music Tuesday features a track consisting entirely of Garageband default loops. i.e., no "jam packs" (man, where the heck did I put that disk!)

A dancey, drum-and-bassy, trancey track, this one reminded me of outer space, so I named it "Solar Terrestrial Dispatch, because I thought it would be funny to have a song I could call "S.T.D.".

Streetlight Flicker - Winter Circle

PROPS WHERE PROPS ARE DUE:

I stumbled on the "Garageband.com Faceoff" podcast about a two weeks ago (I was actually trying to find my own podcast on the podcastosphere).

Oklahomeboys, "Winter Circle" showed up a few episodes ago. Now, don't get me wrong- I really don't like "Streetlight Flicker"- Frankly, a bit to candy-coated for my taste. But dammit, just from the 40-50 seconds on the "faceoff", I can't get that damn chorus out of my head! Haven't even heard the full song and i'm singing "watch the color of the streetlight, flicka flicka" as i'm washing the dishes. "Okay- i gotta give em props", i said.

Actually the candy-coating reminds me of one of my first bands. (Hey- I was sixteen, gimme break!) I wrote them an email and signed it, "not necc. a fan but i know a well-written song when i hear one."

Experimental and animal studies, as well as genetic mutationsin man, have indicated that the development of dentition isunder the control of several genes. So far, mutations in MSX1and PAX9 have been associated with dominantly inherited formsof human tooth agenesis that mainly involve posterior teeth.We identified a large kindred with several individuals affectedwith molar oligodontia that was transmitted as an isolated autosomal-dominanttrait. Two-point linkage analysis using DNA from the familyand polymorphic marker D14S288 in chromosome 14q12 produceda maximum lod score of 2.29 at = 0.1. So I’m puttin it out there for folks who don't already know...

In my former life, I was a song writer extraordinaire. Where do you thing the phrase "new songs daily" originated?! (okay, *almost* daily). And with an audience of like, 7?, 8?, 9 of my closest friends? I was on the verge of internet stardomnesshood!

Then the Thesis thing started... Then the new car, Then the studio theft, Then more Thesis, blah blah blah (or is it yadda yadda yadda?)…

Well, just because I'm not "writing" new songs daily, doesn't mean I'm not thinking of 'em!

Yesterday I said to a colleague,
"Yeah- I wrote a song in the shower this morning. It took about
8 seconds for it to become a song. But it'll never get recorded."

And then the rest of the morning it- the song- was eatin' at me. I couldn’t stop thinking about what a cool song that would be! So what's an addict to do? I take 30-40 minutes of a lunch break and a couple GarageBand tracks and bust out a one-verse song. Sure it sounds a lot like another song, but it's still funny. To me anyway.

And I've only listened to it about 30 times in the last 24 hours!!!

You may have noticed the lack of a New Music Tuesday this week. Well what can I say- someone broke into my office a summarily ripped off the entire recording studio... (And by broke-in, I mean, WHAT KINDA DUMBASSS leaves their office open and then walks away for 1hr and 15 minutes?!?)

Drums. gone.
Loops, microphone, effects rack, gone.
100+ original recordings of which only 1/2 are backed up somewhere, gone.

I could have squeezed out an oldy-but-goody to round out a month of "Bushfinger Classics", but frankly, i'm really depressed right now and can't seem to see the urgency in that.

We'll see what next week is like.

Doing "research" on the 2006 Warped Tour line up, apparently every band since 2004 is "emo" now. What is emo?

Almost a full 24 hours later and I'm just now getting a chance to listen to "episode 2" on something other than expensive a** headphones. Sounds like we're broadcasting out of someone's kitchen! (Or, in this case, the dining room just next to the kitchen!?). Car stereo test: boxy, bassy... gonna have to fire that dern engineer or get a better nicrophone!
